Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate Owens was a crew member of a PBM-5S2 Catalina patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 40, based in Okurokami, Japan. On June 15, 1951, on returning from a patrol over Korea, his aircraft ran into bad weather and crashed into a mountain in Japan.
