Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician, Second Class Nightingale was a member of Air Antisubmarine Squadron 23, Anti-Submarine Air Carrier Group 55 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS YORKTOWN (CVS-10). On March 17, 1968, he was a crew member of a Martin Tracker Anti-Submarine Aircraft (S-2E) on a night surveillance mission over North Vietnam coastal area of Vinh, when bad weather set in and contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
