Colonel Nichols was a member of the 14th Air Commando Squadron and on temporary duty with the 602nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, Nakhon Phanom Air Base, Thailand. On September 1, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a protective mission of a search for a downed airman about 10 miles offshore of North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by 37mm anti-aircraft fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
