Sergeant First Class Newton was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On February 26, 1966, he was a member of a long range reconnaissance patrol near Tuy Hoa, Phy Yen Province, South Vietnam when the were listed as Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
