Sergeant First Class Newton was a member of Detachment B-52, 5th Special Forces Group. On April 17, 1969, he was a member of a reconnaissance team inserted into Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam 9 miles from Laos. His patrol encountered the enemy and he was declared Missing in Action. His remains were recovered on October 19, 2006 and identified on June 18, 2007. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
