Private Murphy was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Private Murphy was a member of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was wounded and taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy near Taejon, South Korea on July 30, 1950. He was held prisoner in the Taejon jail. When his injured right leg became gangrenous, it had to be amputated. He died three days later on September 24, 1950. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
