Captain Moriarty was a member of the 615th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Phan Rang Air Base, South Vietnam. On March 22, 1971, he was the pilot of a North American Super Sabre Fighter (F-100D) on a mission 5 miles south of Sepone, Savannakhet Province, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
