Major Menges was a member of the 25th Tactical Air Support Squadron. On January 2, 1967, he was an observer in a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a mission over Laos. His remains were recovered on September 22, 1980 and identified on April 30, 1982. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
