First Lieutenant McMurry was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

USMA Class 1949, First Lieutenant McMurry was the pilot of a B-26C with the 8th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Wing based at Kunsan Air Base (K-8), Korea. On April 19, 1952, after take off on a combat mission, the aircraft crashed into the Yellow Sea one mile from shore. He was presumed dead on May 4, 1952. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
