Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class McKain was a member of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On May 3, 1968, he was the pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) on an armed escort for a reconnaissance team operating west of Khe San, South Vietnam. While making a pass at an enemy gun position, the aircraft was hit by 37mm anti-aircraft fire, exploded and crashed. His remains were recovered on June 11, 1985 and identified on March 11, 2008. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
