Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician, Second Class McGrane was a member of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 2, Carrier Anti-Submarine Group 57 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS HORNET (CVS-12). On July 19, 1967, he was a crewman of a Lockheed Viking Anti-Submarine Helicopter (SH-3A) on a rescue mission of a downed pilot near Phu Ly, Nam Ha Province, North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on October 14, 1982 and identified on October 26, 1982. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
