Lieutenant Colonel McCormick was a member of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. On October 6, 1972, he was the pilot of a North American Rockwell Bronco (OV10-A) directing Naval gunfire near Da Nang, South Vietnam, when his aircraft exploded for unknown reasons and fell into the South China Sea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
