Captain McClellan was a member of the 1st Air Commando Squadron, Pleiku, South Vietnam. On November 14, 1965, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) supporting one company of U.S. Infantry on Landing Zone "X-RAY" in western Pleiku Province. His aircraft was shot down by ground fire. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
