First Lieutenant Lopes was a pilot of a F-86 Sabre Jet fighter bomber the 16th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 51st Fighter-Interceptor Group. While on a mission over Korea, his aircraft was struck by enemy fire and he landed at a friendly base. He took a C-47 transport back to Okinawa. While flying over the Sea of Japan, the transport lost contact with its base. He was listed as Missing in Action on October 15, 1950 and was presumed dead.
