Major Lerner was a member of the 346th Bomber Squadron, 307th Strategic Wing, Utopea Air Base, Thailand. On December 20, 1972, he was the electronic warfare officer of a Boeing Stratofortress Bomber (B-52D) on a bombing mission over Hanoi, North Vietnam, when the aircraft was shot down by a surface to air missile. His remains were recovered on April 10, 1986 and identified on October 30, 2003. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
