Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class Leonard was a member of the 158th Aviation Battalion, 160th Aviation Group, 101st Airborne Division. On February 15, 1971, he was the pilot of a Boeing Chinook Cargo Handling Helicopter (CH-47C) that was ferrying gasoline into Savannakhet Province, Laos when the aircraft was hit by ground fire exploded and crashed about 10 miles southeast of Sepone, Laos. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
