Major Lapham was a member of the 14th Air Commando Wing. On February 8, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a close support mission on the Demilitarized Zone. He successfully broke a heavy siege upon American troops, then his aircraft was hit by machine gun fire and exploded. His remains were recovered on November 16, 2005 and identified on July 24, 2006. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
