Master Sergeant Laney was a member of the Command and Control Detachment, 5th Special Forces Group. On June 3, 1967, he was a passenger in a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) on an extraction mission 15 miles inside Laos west of the A Shau Valley, that received enemy fire and crashed on takeoff. His remains were recovered on February 16, 1999 and identified on August 14, 2000. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
