For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Koontz was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Citation, the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

First Lieutenant Koontz was the pilot of a B-26C Invader bomber with the 90th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Wing. On September 2, 1951, while on a night intruder mission, the aircraft crashed in a ball of fire. One parachute was observed. He was listed as Missing in Action. He was presumed dead February 28, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
