Major Kommendant was a member of the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, South Vietnam. On August 8, 1966, he was the navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a close support mission over South Vietnam. Shortly after the second bomb run on enemy troops, his aircraft was hit and exploded. MAJ Kommendant's name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. His remains have been recovered and identified.
