In November 1943, Private Kines was assigned to Company F, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division which met stiff Japanese resistance when landing on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands. In the attempt to secure the island, and over several days of intense fighting, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors were killed and more than 2,000 wounded. In June 2015, a nongovermental organization notified DPAA that they discovered a burial site on Betio Island and recovered the remains of what they believe were 35 U.S. Marines who fought during the battle. PVT Kines' remains were included in those of the group and accounted for.

Private Kines' name is permanently inscribed at the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu.
