Major Kerr was a member of the 606th Air Commando Squadron, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Airfield, Thailand. On August 22, 1967, he was the pilot of a Douglas Counter Invader Attack Aircraft (A-26A) over the Plain of Jars, Laos. Radio contact was lost and his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. 

Through the work of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, the remains of Major John C.G. Kerr were accounted for in 2024. His name is permanently inscribed on the “Courts of the Missing” at the Honolulu Memorial.
