Major Kelly was the pilot of a F4U-5NL Corsair night fighter with Marine Night Fighter Squadron 513, Marine Air Group 33, 1st Marine Air Wing. On June 29, 1952, while on a combat mission, his aircraft crashed into a hill at the end of the runway at Kimpo Airfield (K-14).
