First Lieutenant Kelly was the co-pilot of a C-119C troop transport based at Stewart Air Force Base, Smyrna, Tennessee. On September 1, 1950, the aircraft was flying from Stewart AFB to Castle Air Force Base, California when it experienced engine trouble and crashed near Parsons, Tennessee, killing four crew members and three passengers.
