Lieutenant Colonel Keller was a member of the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 1, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a combat mission near Ban Karai Pass, Laos, where his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. LTC Keller's remains have been recovered and identified.
