PVT Kelder was captured in early 1942 by the Japanese forces during the battle of the Bataan Peninsula. He died while in captivity by the enemy forces at one of the infamous Cabanatuan POW Camps. Following the war, he and the co-mingled remains of 10 other Unknowns were reinterred in a mass grave at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. In late 2014, the remains of these Unknowns were disinterred from the Plot A Row 12 Grave 195 at the Manila American Cemetery. PVT Kelder's remains were identified in 2015. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery.
