Major Jones was a member of the 17th Wild Weasel Wing, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, Korat Air Base, Thailand. On April 16, 1972, he was the electronics warfare officer of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105G) on a suppression mission over Haiphong, North Vietnam. While executing its mission, the aircraft was struck by ground fire and crashed in the mud flats of the Song Da Bach River 3 miles south of Quang Yen. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
