Lieutenant Commander Johnson was a member of Helicopter Attack Squadron 3, U.S. Navy. On September 1, 1967, he was the pilot of a Bell Huey Utility Helicopter (UH-1B) on a predawn emergency launch to interdict Viet Cong forces attacking a friendly outpost. As it lifted off the USS GARRETT COUNTY, it crashed into the Bassac River. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
