Major Jefferson was a member of the 120th Tactical Fighter Squadron., 35th Tactical Fighter Wing. On April 3, 1969, he was an observer in a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a visual reconnaissance mission out of Phan Rang, South Vietnam. Radio contact was lost. His remains were recovered on September 12, 1984 and identified on April 30, 2007. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
