Colonel Hynds was a member of the 11th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Udorn Air Base, Thailand. On August 2, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Phantom II Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-4C) on a mission near Vinh, North Vietnam, when it was hit by enemy fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
