First Lieutenant Donald L. Hughes was born in Buffalo, New York on October 21, 1909. During WWII he was commissioned a First Lieutenant with the 5th Armored Division, and went on to serve in combat at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Battle of the Bulge, Luxembourg, and Rhineland. He earned the Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster. After the war he worked as a civilian for the U.S. Army in the Panama Canal Zone, where he married Marina Elisa Montilla, and had Four sons. He died in the Panama Canal Zone on August 5, 1970, from natural causes, and is buried at the Corozal American Cemetery, Republic of Panama, with his son, Donald L. Hughes, Jr.
