Private First Class Hines was a member of 244th Aviation Company, 164th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade. On November 8, 1967, he was the observer of a Grumman Mohawk Aircraft (OV-1C) on an aerial reconnaissance along the southern coast of South Vietnam. There were numerous naval craft in the offshore area and his aircraft made several low approaches. On one pass the aircraft its left wing struck the water and the aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
