Staff Sergeant Hendrix was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165, Marine Air Group 36, 1st Marine Air Wing. On July 11, 1972, he was flying in a Sikorsky Sea Stallion Cargo Helicopter (CH-53D) based on the Amphibious Assault Ship (Helicopter) USS TRIPOLI (LPH-10) on combat support of operations at Quang Tri City, South Vietnam. When approaching the drop zone, the aircraft was hit by a heat seeking SA-7 missile, burst into flames and crashed. His remains were recovered on August 29, 2000 and identified on April 22, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
