For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant Colonel Hayes was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
Lieutenant Colonel Hayes was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a B-26B Invader bomber with the 90th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group. On December 27, 1952, he was on a night intruder mission when contact with his aircraft was lost. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 28, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
