Joseph Whipple Harris was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1837. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and served as a Lieutenant on the USS Lancaster stationed at Panama and patrolling the Pacific Ocean for Confederate vessels during the Civil War. On August 24, 1861 he died of fever aboard ship and was buried at Flamenco Island, Panama. On 1911, his remains were reinterred at the Ancon cemetery. On 1914, his remains were disinterred, cremated and buried at Corozal American Cemetery.
