Staff Sergeant Harned was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group. On March 24, 1970, he was a passenger in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) being extracted from a point 14 miles in Ratanokiri Province, Cambodia. As the helicopter started to ascend, it was hit by enemy fire and exploded. His remains were recovered on April 12, 1995 and identified on June 20, 2001. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
