Colonel Hail was a member of 1131st Special Activities Squadron. On August 2, 1965, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) that took off from Danang Airport, South Vietnam and contact was lost soon thereafter. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
