Captain Gorton was a member of the 1st Air Commando Squadron. On December 6, 1963, he was a member of the crew of a Douglas Invader Bomber (B-26B) on a photographic reconnaissance mission near the coast of Kien Hoa Province, South Vietnam about 40 miles south-southeast of Saigon near the mouth of the Mekong River. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
