Captain Godfrey was a member of 1131st Special Activities Squadron. On January 11, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) flying close air support 75 miles south of Saigon and 15 miles west of Soc Trang, South Vietnam. His aircraft was shot down by hostile ground fire. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
