Major Gilchrist was a member of the 431st Tactical Fighter Squadron. On October 7, 1966, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Phantom II Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-4C) on a reconnaissance mission near Ba Donover North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
