Lieutenant Colonel Fowler was a member of the 523rd Tactical Fighter Squadron at Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On June 6, 1972, he the pilot of in a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a combat air patrol north of Hanoi, North Vietnam. Upon completion of its mission, the aircraft was returning to Thailand and as it passed over Yen Bai Airfield, it was hit by a surface to air missile and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
