Captain Fickler was a member of Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 11, Marine Air Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing at Danang Air Base. On January 17, 1969, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on an armed reconnaissance mission over A Shau Valley in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
