Johnson Cecil Ewing was born in Glenville, West Virginia on October 17, 1882. He moved to Panama to work as a foreman for the Panama Canal Company. Upon retirement, he remained in Panama. He died on January 5, 1943 and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
