Sergeant Major Dexter was a member of Command and Control Detachment, 5th Special Forces Group. On June 3, 1967, he was a passenger in a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) on an extraction mission 15 miles inside Laos west of the A Shau Valley, that received enemy fire and crashed on takeoff. He was taken prisoner and died in captivity. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
