Ambassador Fay Allen Des Portes was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina on June 16, 1890. He was a member of the State of South Carolina House of Representatives from 1926 to 1928 and the Senate from 1928 to 1933. He was the U.S. Minister to Bolivia from 1933 to 1936 and to Guatemala from 1936 to 1943. Then he was the U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica from 1943 to 1944. He became ill and died on September 17, 1944 at the Gorgas Hospital, Canal Zone. He was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
