Major Deichelmann was a member of the 56th Operations Wing, Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On September 6, 1968, he was the pilot of a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) that departed Bien Hoa Air Base and disappeared 30 miles southeast of Xuan Loc, over South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
