Jose De Lavandeyra was born in Havana, Cuba in 1853. He immigrated to the United States in 1859 and became a naturalized citizen on September 28, 1874. He moved to the Canal Zone on July 16, 1905. He was fluent in six languages so the Commission transferred him to be an interpreter with the Correspondence Bureau of the Executive Department. He lived in Ancon. He was awarded the Roosevelt Medal with three service bars. He died on November 3, 1917 in his room in the bachelors quarters at Ancon and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
