Sergeant First Class De John was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On June 13, 1951, he was in an assault boat crossing the Pukhang-gong River near Chichon-ni, North Korea when it sank in the swift current and he drowned.
