James Stuart De Frees was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 20, 1883. He married Josephine Katherine Chenault on October 1, 1918 in Richmond, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was promoted to Sergeant serving as an Armament-Foreman in the Coast Artillery with assignments at Camp Meade, Maryland, Fort H.G. Wright, New York and Fort Sherman, Canal Zone. When he retired he lived with his wife in the Canal Zone. He died on December 23, 1951 at the Gorgas Army Hospital. He was buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery then reinterred at the Corozal American Cemetery next to his wife, Josephine, in 1979.
