Sergeant First Class Dawes was a member of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On May 5, 1966, he was a passenger aboard a Boeing Chinook Cargo Handling Helicopter (CH-47) returning to Nha Trang, South Vietnam from a medical evacuation mission. The aircraft experienced power failure and crashed into the ocean about 400 meters offshore. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
